| DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECH |
1. Bacteria can sense their quorum through discreet signaling. Only after they sense that their number is high enough do they swarm and trigger their virulence genes leading to disease. A major focus of our research is to search for and design compounds that interfere with quorum sensing and thus thwart the progress of a disease without killing the bacteria.
2. Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari) produces saponins that are of major medicinal use. In the last five years, we have developed a method whereby the root cells of this plant can be established in suspension culture and made to secrete the medicinal saponins in the medium from where they can be extracted in pure form.
